Osprey Fairview Backpacks 40L 55L 70L Reviewed

The Osprey Fairview Backpack Series is a popular backpack here in Canada, and is comparable to the Farpoint Series, yet it’s geared specifically towards women.

Even though there are many similarities between the two sets of models, the Fairview deserves its own full review so you can see what makes it such a best-selling travel backpack.

To accommodate to different types of travel, it comes in 40L, 55L, and the 70L backpack sizes. The smallest one best fits carry-on conditions, while the other two are mainly for longer trips up to months at a time.

First Impressions

The Fairview packs are clearly built for travel and aren’t really made for making a fashion statement. But this certainly isn’t a negative thing, and we love that you don’t need to be afraid to place it on the ground, put it through checked baggage at an airport, take it in the snow, or bring it on a camping trip. It won’t easily scuff or scratch, and you can trust that your belongings will remain cushioned and snug.

Something else that stands out is how comfortably these bags sit on the back. They are precisely designed for women’s bodies, where the hip strap sits higher, and the shoulder straps wrap around to adapt to a slimmer body frame.

The differences between the Farpoint appear minimal at an initial glance, but it’s clear that this female version is constructed with a narrower body in mind. Having a backpack distinctly made for women isn’t completely necessary, as women have used unisex bags for years. Having said that though, it is quite a pleasant surprise to have something that is built to more comfortably conform to a different body shape, leading to a better travel experience.

First up is the smallest capacity which is one of the lightest packs that they sell. It’s a little wider than the other two, but it’s still not bulky and sits very flush to the back.

Materials

A 210D nylon construction with mini hex diamond ripstop means this bag is extremely hard-wearing. Nylon is one of the most commonly used textiles for these kinds of packs, as it means that they can put up with a lot.

Paired with the 600D pack cloth reinforcements, it can go on rough terrains, in the snow, and resist moderate water exposure. The mesh is also high-quality, with large holes for maximum breathability and stretch.

Organisation

The primary compartment is pretty massive, and you can fit a whole bunch of stuff inside. You can choose to use packing cubes or compression sacks to keep things even more organised, but it’s not completely necessary since it opens like a clamshell. We like the vast mesh zippered pocket that sits behind the front flap, but it does get a little hard to fit bulkier things inside if the whole pack is full.

For flatter or softer items, like undergarments, some toiletries, electronic cables, and notebooks, it’s a convenient feature. Something that hasn’t been upgraded since the Farpoint is the laptop/tablet storage section. We still aren’t ecstatic that it’s at the front, as it affects the weight distribution, but the padding of these sleeves is admirable. It’s also handy that the tablet segment has a zip, so it will stay secure inside.

Design

One of the most subtle differences we’ve noticed between this edition and it’s Farpoint brother is the actual shape of the bag. This women’s version tapers from the top to the bottom, getting smaller as it reaches lower down your back. This helps to concentrate the weight at the top and middle of your torso, putting less strain on the lower back.

Another interesting element is that the shoulder adjustment buckles can be clipped away to prevent dangling, unlike the men’s edition that has a simple strap to store them away. It feels more secure and locked in, and I don’t feel like it’s going to fall out or get in the way.

Straps/Handles

The shoulder straps are slimmer, so they don’t feel bulky on the tops of the shoulders. They also curve inwards quite a bit, so as to not slip off. The hip straps are also altered, being a little shorter but wider to imitate the naturally larger hips of women’s bodies.

There are two other handles to carry it, in addition to the detachable duffel bag strap. One handle is on the side, and the other is at the top. Both are soft and cushiony, and let you quickly and easily pick it up without needing to put it over your back. We don’t mind the idea of the long shoulder strap, but you can’t use it when the bag is at full capacity as it would be too heavy.

Moving on to the middle option, this is geared towards trips of around 2 to 3 months for the average female backpacker. Since it is less than the largest version, it’s the perfect midpoint for taking less items with you so you don’t need to carry such a large weight.

Made from the same nylon mini hex diamond ripstop, it’s a lightweight frame that doesn’t add unnecessary weight. You can clearly notice the diamond ripstop element on the side panels and at the front.

These materials not only resist tears and rips, but they also prevent any breakage from happening when the pack is filled to the max. It’s flexible enough to stretch a little when you’re trying to fill it but remains stable and durable.

Organisation

The main section is of course larger than the previous one, and for these we think it would be handy if there were a few more organisation dividers. You do have the same mesh pocket that lines the flap, but we think packing cubes are a good idea to keep things separated and in order.

The daypack is one of our favorite parts, as it increases its versatility. As well as attaching to the front, you can even clip it onto the front harness section, which they call the ‘kangaroo style’ attachment. This makes it more secure and prevents theft if you’re holding valuables in the small daypack.

Design

This also comes in Misty Grey and Rainforest Green. We love the light blue accents on the Misty Grey version, as you can easily see where the lash points are for attaching accessories. Another great thing about these colors is that they don’t show dirt like lighter bags would. They don’t brown or fade after long-term use.

Chunky YKK zippers are prominent here. As well as heavy-duty, they interlock to form a hole for using a travel lock. They are easy to grab and tug with the smooth, yet hard plastic pulls.

Straps/Handles

Narrower shoulder straps mean they sit more comfortably, and they also don’t feel like they’re going to slip off. It also has side and top handles, but I don’t think you’d be using the top handle much as it’s quite a long pack in terms of height.

However, it’s there if you need it. You’ve got the same sternum and hip straps, where the hip part is highly cushioned to sit comfortably below the ribs, providing the safest method of carrying over long distances.

As well as the regular 210D nylon seen throughout each model, this also has the same LightWire framework which is very important here in terms of holding a much heavier capacity.

The 600D pack cloth is again places in high-stress areas, where the pack holds a lot of the wait. It also comes into handy for resisting general wear, but it isn’t completely invincible. If it does happen to get a rip, the hex diamond pattern prevents any further damage.

Organisation

Various attachment points are found all over the bag. These are useful for those who use a lot of outdoor gear, or for those who may need more room after fully packing the interior. You can hang dirty hiking shoes, drink bottles, sleeping bags, and so on.

Much like the 55, you can use the daypack ‘kangaroo style’ to avoid theft. It’s a smart addition as you can use it as a carry-on as this larger size is often too large for airline specifications. This daypack has all the smaller compartments, like the dual mesh pouches, and an upper stash pocket.

Design

Available in the same colors, I really think that these theme choices hold more significance than you may think. I love that Osprey hasn’t gone for predictable pink or purple like you would typically find for women-specific packs. We thoroughly enjoy the subtle colors, and you can recognize instantly that they are different to the men’s version, without being overtly obvious.

It’s still a little disappointing that the laptop and tablet sleeves are positioned at the front, but a little bit of the weight can be reduced if you don’t include the front daypack. We love the lower sleeping pad straps, as it leaves more room in the central compartment.

Straps/Handles

An ergonomic hip belt, harness, back panel, and yoke create a durable suspension system, which will support you over long walks and hikes, especially while carrying reasonably heavy loads.

Like the others, you can tuck the whole system away using the rollable flap. Plus, you’ve also got the inner laptop and tablet sleeves which help to store your devices safely within padding.

Most Asked Questions

Are the Osprey Fairview Travel Backpacks Waterproof?

The 210D nylon and 600D pack cloth construction are water resistant, not fully waterproof. This means that moisture will bead easier and roll off the fabric for light to moderate conditions, but it won’t withstand intense or harsh wet conditions. Also, the zippers aren’t designed as waterproof, so large levels of moisture can seep through. We recommend using a rain cover if you’re unsure about the weather.

Can I Use the Fairview Backpacks as Carry Ons?

The 40L size is the best one to use as a carry on, as it meets a lot of airplane specifications. You may get away with the 55, but that definitely depends on the airline. The two larger versions have smaller daypacks attached to them, so you can take the smaller pack off and use it as a carry on if need be.

Which Size Should I Get?

As well as these different capacities, you can choose from a small/medium size, or a medium/large size. If you’re over 6 feet tall, then the M/L is the better fit. If you have a longer torso and are under 6 feet though, you can certainly go for the M/L also.

Are the Osprey Fairview Backpacks for Women?

Although technically anyone can buy them, the company have definitely designed this backpack with women in mind, this is clearly shown in some of its features we discuss here today. Men are recommended to opt for the Farpoint series instead, as they have features geared towards men.

Conclusion on the Osprey Fairview Series

After reviewing the Farpoint, we have been so excited to take a proper look at the Osprey Fairview in the 40L, 55L, and 70L sizes. We love that this brand has created something aimed at women, with different features like narrower straps that don’t lack padding.

Also a curved shoulder strap design to fit smaller bodies, and an increasingly padded hip belt. Each adaptation, no matter how small, comes together to achieve a whole different carry experience to unisex or men’s-specific travel bags.
