Our First Thoughts

It isn’t difficult to see that this backpack is premium for a reason. It’s known for being one of the best-fitting, comfortable, and breathable packs out there, used for short hiking trips. It has even been upgraded since the 2018 version, with enhanced durability in high-impact areas, and smart alterations to the fit and color. Also, it’s the men’s version of the women’s Osprey Aura AG 65, which is also a cult classic.

The anti-gravity (AG) feature has intrigued us for a while, and it looks like a promising suspension system that’s been perfected for comfortable load-lifting. This trampoline-style feature has been taken to a whole new level, enabling it to carry a heavy load effortlessly.

While the price is quite steep, it’s important to remember that this bag does get placed in the premium category. We appreciate that it tackles the problem of airflow, which is something that some brands should take note of. This makes it easier to hike during warmer weather, which we like because you’re not limited to travelling only during certain conditions.

What We Love about the Atmos 50l and 65l

GOLD QUALITY – Anti-Gravity

This system essentially helps it feel like you’re carrying less weight than is actually in your pack. It provides a solution to the ultimate goal of all backpackers – increased comfort. In fact, it’s the first fully ventilated hip belt of its kind, so you can trek through even the hottest of climates. It basically forces the pack to conform as comfortably as possible to your body, to lift the load much easier than a regular bag.

SILVER FEATURE – Ventilation

This is an exceptionally breathable backpack. The mesh is 3D, so it’s thicker and much higher quality than regular mesh. Throughout the whole panel where the back sits, the mesh is suspended to let an extraordinary amount of air flow through while you’re exercising. This reduces sweat, which in turn increases the level of comfort.

BRONZE HIGHLIGHT– Support

In addition to the AG system, the LightWire peripheral frame is a feature that Osprey often use for their packs. It produces a reliable amount of support, while maintaining its lightweight nature. It’s quite stiff, which makes it effective at lowering heavy loads.

Main Overview – Breaking Down Every Detail

Carry Comfort

With the AG suspension, which is a take on trampoline-style systems, it features a continuous back panel of lightweight and durable mesh that runs all the way down to the hips. It’s a seamless design that encourages as much air circulation as possible, as well as reducing the heavy capacity. It creates an even pressure-point for much better weight distribution.

The entire thing hugs your body like a glove, but it doesn’t feel overly tight and none of the parts stick into the skin, like the sternum strap which sits flat and snug on the chest. In addition to this AG element, you’re getting maximum comfort with the ExoForm-Biostretch harness, Fit-on-the-Fly hip belt, and load lifter bar. Also, all straps are padded extremely well.

Straps

The shoulder straps curve as they reach the hips, hugging the shoulders to prevent slipping. They are completely padded and covered in wide-hole mesh to breathe. InsideOut compression straps give impressive load-lifting support.

They are located on the upper and lower sides to stabilize the load and create a fairly low profile. You can also find straps that will hold a sleeping pad, and they can be removed if needed. The sternum strap isn’t fully padded, by the nylon is quite thick. The side hip pads are cushioned to the max and continue to distribute the weight.

Top & Bottom

At the top you’ll find the floating lid. It has dual zipper pockets to store smaller items like maps, your phone, etc, and you can remove this lid if you want to reduce the weight. To protect the main compartment closure, a flat jacket gets pulled and buckled over the hole – it creates a tight fit that won’t easily allow moisture inside.

Even though it is a bit of a pain to dig through the main segment to find certain items in the middle, the base zip comes in handy for retrieving things at the very bottom.

Pockets

On the side next to the left shoulder strap, you’ve got a Stow-on-the-Go attachment to connect your trekking pole to remain hands-free. There are twin side stretchy pockets, double zippered hip belt pouches, 2 front top sections, and a large stretch front mesh pocket for storing smaller gear like a thin rain jacket.

All these smaller pockets are handy for storing nutrition gels, bars, your phone, wallet, and anything else that can fit. Having most of them zippered or with a cord closure keeps things secure, so they won’t fall out when you move around. The larger mesh pouches are convenient for storing bulky things like your bottles, a rain jacket, or fuel containers.

Dedicated Sleeping Bag Section

The lower sleeping bag compartment is one of our favourite parts. We think it’s such a helpful feature to keep this section separated from the main storage area, as it leaves more space for your clothes and other equipment.

It helps you remain more organised, eliminating the need to rummage around or remove all the other items to access the sleeping bag.

Ventilation

As part of the AG technology, the entire back part is covered in a suspended mesh panel. Plus, the shoulder straps and hip belt have the same type of webbing.

osprey atmos inner view

This mesh placement has obviously been well though-out, because it hits areas that are known for producing a lot of sweat during high-intensity activity.

Weight

At 2.2kg, you may not think it’s as lightweight as most hiking packs on the market. In saying that though, we think this is a pretty competitive weight when you compare it to other luxury packs in the same field.

Also, when you think about how many incredible features are packed into the one bag, the weight doesn’t feel like a deal-breaker. If you do need to reduce some of the weight, you can take off the top lid and use the FlapJacket to cover the main section.

Most Asked Questions – We’ve Got You Covered

Is it waterproof?

This pack is water resistant, not waterproof. This basically means that the nylon material will repel water through encouraging it to form into droplets, but it won’t handle high levels of moisture. At a certain point, water will pass through. We suggest bringing a rain cover just in case.

How much does it cost?

It depends where you purchase it from, and also which size you get. Between the Small, Medium, and Large models, it can range from $300 to over $500.

What waist size can use the hip belt?

This depends on the size of the bag. Even though it is always 65L, it comes in sizes Small, Medium, and Large. The largest would fit anything larger than 40”, and the smallest will fit around 34” waists.

How much does it weigh?

This pack weighs just 2.2kg, which isn’t as lightweight as some other hiking backpacks with the same capacity. However, we believe that slightly more weight is a small sacrifice considering the huge amount of comfort it provides.

Conclusion on Osprey Atmos AG Backpacks

After diving in the deep end of the Osprey Atmos AG 75, it’s clear to see why this is such a popular premium backpack for hiking and general travelling. With the award-winning anti-gravity suspension and incredible level of breathability, we’re reminded that backpacking doesn’t have to be a suffer-fest.

Even though it doesn’t hold as much gear as some other packs, this is evidently a reliable travel companion for shorter hikes and treks due to its high-performance abilities and outstanding construction.
